Five Portraits Every Musician Needs

Seattle Music Photographer tells five must-have portraits for every artist.

As a Seattle and NYC-based music photographer, I have had the privilege of capturing the beauty and energy of each city’s vibrant music scene. In my experience, there are five essential portraits that every musician needs in their portfolio. These portraits showcase your talent, style, and help you to connect to your fans and industry professionals.

Sir Mix A Lot

First, Every musician needs a “hero shot”. This is the portrait that captures the essence of you - the artist, and conveys your unique energy and personality. It is the one shot that you keep going back to that stands alone and represents who you are with a punch! This is the first image that fans and industry professionals will see, so it is important to get it right. (Coming up next month, I’ll go further into how to create and capture that “hero shot”).

Second, Musicians should have a portrait that shows them in action. This could be a live image of performing on stage, it could be with an instrument, or creating in the studio. This portrait will showcase the artist’s talent and passion for their craft. It’s also a great way to connect with fans who are eager to see behind-the-scenes moments.

Third, Musicians need a portrait that captures their unique style. This portrait can help establish your brand, and can be used on album covers and other marketing materials. It could feature your signature fashion, or an artistic shot that captures the mood and vibe of your music.

Dirty D

Fourth, Consider a portrait that showcases the members of your band or other artists who you collaborate with. This is a great way to introduce your fans to the people behind the music, and shows your collaborative spirit and musical community. It can help establish your place in the music scene. These portraits can also include images that are more candid and relaxed which humanizes you and is a great way for fans to connect with you.

Finally (Fifth), Create an image that tells a story. This could be an image that captures a moment from your latest music video, or an image that tells a story connected to a track, or a mood that your music portrays. People connect to stories. They are moved by stories and one image can tell a very unique and moving story that truly brings your audience in.

Hip Hop Rat Pack

Whether you are just starting out and building your portfolio or you are a seasoned veteran, these five portraits will help you connect with your fans and showcase your talent, power, and creativity as an artist.
